Overview
The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) is a dynamic and progressive Research Program that has already gained a global reputation in the theory, research and practice of conflict analysis and resolution.
ACPACS objectives are:
- To be at the forefront of excellence in basic and applied research, consultancy and training, in the areas of conflict, conflict transformation and peace-building
- Through its engagement with the research/practice nexus, to contribute to a better understanding of issues of conflict and peace, and also actively to support conflict prevention and resolution
- To work with cross-disciplinary, cuturally sensitive, dialogical approaches
- To provide policy-relevant, innovative research results and advice that is of practical relevance for the sustainable and peaceful development of communities and people in the Pacific, South-east Asia and Australia.
ACPACS conducts a range of activities and services, including:
- providing advanced-level short courses and training for government and NGOs engaged in peace-keeping, peace-building, development activities, humanitarian intervention, and work in conflict contexts;
- providing expert advice on issues concerned with conflict and its resolution, particularly regarding the role of the judicial and governance sectors in achieving structural stability and peace;
- increasing understanding and knowledge of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes by conducting comparative research and providing training in negotiation, mediation, cross-cultural conflict resolution and facilitation.
