Prospective Research Higher Degree students

ISSR is committed to providing the highest quality experience for PhD students.   Students who undertake a PhD with staff in the Institute will interact with some of Australia's leading social science researchers and have access to the country's most advanced social science research infrastructure in a dynamic research environment in one of the largest social science institutes in the country.  In the the last three years, PhD graduates supervised by ISSR staff have won the Jean Martin Award for the Best PhD Thesis in Sociology, and the Australian and New Zealand Regional Science International Award for the best PhD thesis in Regional Science.  PhD students supervised by Institute staff have also been co-winners of the 2007-2008 Best Paper Award in the Journal of Sociology, and the 2006 Best Paper Award in the journal, Applied Research in Quality of Life.

Students in ISSR have access to advanced research training and advice to help them with their research.  The Institute has its own statistical consulting and advising service and is home to the Australian Qualitative Data Archive and the Queensland node of the Australian Social Science Data Archive.  The Institute also runs intensive two week PhD Summer and Winter Schools in research methods and substantive topic areas.  The PhD Summer Workshop is offered to PhD students in institutions who are participating members of the Australian Research Council Network in Spatially Integrated Social Science.  The ISSR PhD Winter Workshop is open to students supervised by ISSR staff, and by staff in the Social and Behavioural Sciences Faculty at the University of Queensland.  Eligible ISSR students are also able to participate in the PhD training programs of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS).

Students who are interested in doing a PhD with ISSR staff supervision will formally enrol for their degree through an academic School in the University of Queensland.  The wide connections between ISSR and other parts of the University mean that advisory teams can be configured to meet individual student needs.  For enquiries about PhD research opportunities in the Institute, please contact the Academic Coordinator for the Institute, Professor Brian Head.  Email brian.head@uq.edu.au, Tel 07 3346 7450.

For information on administrative processes related to postgraduate degrees, expert advice is available from a postgraduate coordinator in one of the related Schools in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences:  see weblink http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/index.html?page=45633.
